Characteristics of Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis
Frequent Characteristics of Crohn’s and Colitis
The colon is frequently involved in Crohn’s disease and is invariable involved in ulcerative colitis. Although rare, patients with ulcerative colitis who have total colon involvement the small intestine. Patients with Crohn’s disease often have close relatives with ulcerative colitis, and vice versa. When there is no granulomatous reaction in Crohn’s disease of the colon, the two lesions may resemble each other clinically as well as pathologically.
There are many epidemiological similarities between the two diseases, including age, race, sex, and geographic distribution. Both conditions are associated with an increased frequency of colonic cancer.
The rates of the two diseases differ slightly with most studies showing ulcerative colitis to be more common than Crohn’s disease. The current estimate of the yearly rate of newly diagnosed cases of ulcerative colitis in Western Europe and the United States is approximately 6-8 cases per 100,000 and the estimated rate of the total number of cases is approximately 70-150 cases per 100,000. The rate of Crohn’s disease is increasing in the western cultures.
