Things To Know About
Stomach Cramps

Abdominal cramps are sharp pains that may simulate the feeling of being punched. They are strong acute pain caused by spasms of the digestive tract, and they are different from pain caused by indigestion or heartburn.

Generally, abdominal cramps are accompanied by other symptoms such as;

  1. Headaches
  2. Constipation or diarrhea
  3. Bloating
  4. Gas
  5. And others

Each person may experience different signs and symptoms. Normally, the digestion process features peristaltic action which produces a propulsion action that pushes forward broken down food through your intestines. These movements do not cause discomfort or pain. However, some people may experience an alteration in the digestive mechanisms with an unusually high number of peristaltic waves, which may cause intensive pain.

Propulsive waves may be of greater intensity after ingestion of large meals or when you eat spicy, fatty or high-sugar foods. Emotional states and stress levels can affect the digestive process and generate a mal-digestion of food. People with abdominal cramps may suffer from nutritional deficiencies due to nutrients mal-digestion and malabsorption. Foods are often poorly digested, and they are eliminated in the faeces causing diarrhea and gas.

Regarding diagnosis, the doctor may order a series of tests to evaluate the origin of abdominal cramps. However, exams results are frequently normal and show absence of organic pathology.

Abdominal cramps may be a symptom of other diseases such as;

  1. Inflammatory bowel disease
  2. Diverticulosis
  3. Constipation
  4. Crritable bowel syndrome
